On March 5, several members from Sacred Heart University's Habitat for Humanity will be departing on a journey to Wilmington, North Carolina. This will be the third year in a row SHU has left the Bridgeport area to help others in need of decent housing. In the past, the dreaded twelve-hour drive was overshadowed by the warm hospitality shown upon our arrival. We are usually greeted and shown our living quarters; a house where the show "Dawson's Creek" was formerly filmed. We are provided meals throughout the week and fend for ourselves the rest of the time.
Over the course of five days we will help erect the walls and roof of a future Habitat home. We start with a concrete base and a plywood floor and work our way up from there. We build every wall, door, and window frame and apply plywood to the exterior of the house. We help lift the tresses onto the roof and then add plywood and a layer of tarpaper. We all work together, sometimes even with the homeowner, to accomplish as much as we can.
We always leave North Carolina with a greater appreciation for the world around us. We not only build a house, but we build memories and friendships that will last forever. No one truly can understand the feeling of satisfaction until they have donated their time to help others in need. This experience will be better than any tropical island vacation any of us could have gone on for spring break.
