Are you positive that you're negative?

Those are the six shocking words that appeared in the e-mails sent out last week to the SHU community about the a free STD testing that took place in the Pitt Center. The reason for the shock is that it was hard to believe at a Catholic University where premarital sex is forbidden, something like this was taking place.

Since we are a Catholic University, anything that seems to have to do with pre-martial sex is not accepted. Our health and wellness center does not give out prescriptions for birth control, plan b, also known at "the morning after pill," or give out condoms, so why a free STD testing? It just doesn't seem to make any sense.

"I think the STD testing is hypocritical, but it is definitely a good idea to find out if you have something. The only thing is that they should also be giving out condoms. It's a catholic school, and everyone knows that sex isn't allowed, but its obviously still going to happen so why not keep it safe," said Danielle Vasely, junior, Hopewell Jct, N.Y.

The fact that the health and wellness center along with the peer educators are taking this step in trying to help students that may be in need of STD testing is great. However, is accepting sex and administering preventatives to STD's like condoms, or birth control, but will this actually happen? Something tells me the answer to that question is no.

It seems the natural order of things should be giving out condoms first, since the lack of condom use is usually what spreads STD's in the first place. You most likely can't get a sexually transmitted disease with out having unprotected sex. So does this mean the University is now accepting pre -martial sex? What kind of hypocritical message did this "free testing" send out to students?

"I think that the university is contradicting itself in that they tell us we can't have the opposite sex in our room past a certain hour and we can get written up for having condoms so what's the point of giving free STD testing? By having these tests the University is admitting that students are breaking the rules that they set for us. While I don't agree with these rules and I think that the testing is a good thing for them to offer, I also think that they should reconsider rules for the dorms. Lets face it, people have sex and they are going to do it no matter what the rules say," said Ryan Hayo, junior, Paramus, N.J.

The STD testing does promote that the University is keeping the students health in mind, which is a good thing. STD's are at an ultimate high and they can cause many long-term health problems in peoples lives. Things like infertility and in some cases STD's can even lead to cancer.

Another huge danger when it comes to STD's is that people don't even know that they are infected so they continue to pass it on to their partners, and then their partner passes it on to someone else. Its just a never ending cycle that only ends in diseased disaster.

Despite the thoughts of how this testing was hypocritical it's obvious that by the University hosting this event they were keeping our best interest in mind, and of course our health. When the initial shock has died down that something like that actually took place here, we should all be hopeful that maybe things are about to change, maybe certain things really are about to be "accepted."

Q. Why is premarital sex bad? My friend just started high school, and she's trying to tell me that it's good and she's going to do it. (Continued…)
