On Saturday, Sept. 8, the Sacred Heart cross country teams came upon the beginning of a new year and attended their first event of the 2007 season at the Fordham Invitational at Van Cordlant Park in the Bronx, N.Y.

"The field is different every year," said head coach Christian Morrison. "This shows that the runners always have to be prepared for what kind of terrain is ahead of them. Van Cordlant Park is even bigger than it was last year, showing the runners were able to step it up."

The Fordham Invitational is open to any school from any division.

The men's team placed 11th out of 22 teams participating in the event with a combined score of 322, whereas the women's team placed 12th out of 23 with a combined score of 296.

There were a total of 233 runners in both of the men and women's race.

The top three runners for the men's team were sophomore Ryan Murdoch, Niantic, David Jones, Ballston Lake, N.Y. and John Kenworthy, Gloversville, N.Y. Finishing in the 68th spot, Murdoch completed the race with a time of 28:39. Jones was the next Pioneer to cross the finish line 71st with a time of 28:54. Following Jones, Kenworthy finished 90th with a time of 29:10.

"We had a tough race this weekend and didnt perform as well as we hoped, but this race was a great learning experience for our team," said Jones.

On the women's team, the first three runners to finish the race were Dana Troy, Lebanon, Kimberly DeLoreto, Hillsdale, N.J. and Samantha Troy, Lebanon. The first runner to reach the end was Dana Troy finishing 25th with a time of 19:57. Immediately following Troy was Kimberly DeLoreto finishing 26th with a time of 19:49. After DeLoreto, the next Pioneer runner to reach the finish line was Samantha Troy finishing 95th with a time of 21:44. Troy and DeLoreto now have the 13th and 14th best times as freshmen in Sacred Heart history.

"Considering it was the first meet of the year, I think the day went pretty well but expect much as the season goes on," said Morrison.

For the other schools attending the men's event, the top three schools were Penn with a total score of 42, Princeton with a total score of 50, and Navy with a total score of 54. On the women's side the top three schools were Princeton with a total score of 20, Penn with a total score of 85, and DePaul with a total score of 118.

The next event for the cross country team is the Central Connecticut State University Ted Owen Invitational. It will be held in New Britain at the Stanley Quarter Park. The race will take place on Saturday, Sept.15.
