"Yesterday was the best of both worlds, we were able to run, and throw at my discretion", said head football coach Paul Gorham.
"It feels good to get this win, we as an offensive line accomplished all our goals dominating the line of scrimmage and not only giving Jason some holes to run through, but also not giving up a sack all day which allowed Dale to make some throws," said senior center, Randy Steyert, Sag Harbor, N.Y.
There were many highlights on the day but no one shined brighter than senior running back Jason Payne, Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. who ran for a career high 207 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns.
"The line basically acted as one unit, they opened up holes and gave me the opportunity to run the ball to the best of my potential, Fink was also able to have great pockets to throw from thanks to the efforts of the line", said Payne.
Payne started off his career high rushing day playing a big role in the opening drive as the Pioneers drove the ball 80 yards down the field. The amount of running the Pioneers did with Payne on the drive set up a Dale Fink, Swansea, Ill. to Corey Bundy, Selden, N.Y. touchdown pass as they connected from 30 yards out to take the lead.
"Controlling the ball on the line of scrimmage allowed us the ability to throw the ball", said Gorham.
Fink had a solid day, throwing 22 times completing 18 passes. Fink was able to spread the ball around nicely as he ended up hitting a total of eight different receivers throughout the afternoon, ending up throwing for 207 yards.
Senior receiver Corey Bundy led all with 83 yards on six catches and one touchdown. Sophomore Steve Tedesco also had a big day catching six balls for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
One of the many offensive highlights on the afternoon included some trickery as the Pioneers opened up the playbook and brought out the quarterback throwback in which full back Brian Freedman threw a six yard touchdown pass to Fink to put Sacred Heart up 28-0 late in the second quarter.
"It felt awkward, I'm not going to lie. It was unusual to be in the end zone acthing the ball. It was a good feeling though," said Fink
As for the Pioneer defense, they were lights out in the first half only allowing one touchdown in the second quarter. Senior safety Jon Wilson, Bloomfield, led the defense once again this week amounting a total of 13 tackles, seven of them solo.
Other notable defensive performances included junior cornerback Andre Isla, Brookhaven, N.Y. who had a key interception, which he returned 25 yards into Marist territory to help seal the victory.
The defense struggled a bit in the second half, keeping the 1,503 fans in attendance alert as the defense tried to hold the Foxes from taking the lead late in the fourth quarter.
"There has never been a game that said the final score after halftime, we have to play the whole sixty minutes," said Wilson.
The Pioneers next game is home against NEC rival St. Francis of Pennsylvania.
