Women's volleyball dominated St. Francis College this past Sunday, capping a three game win streak for the Pioneers. Sacred Heart has not lost since they fell to Fairleigh Dickinson on October 13.
Prior to beating St. Francis 3-0 on Sunday, the Pioneers had just come off consecutive three game sweeps of Quinnipiac University on Saturday, and Wagner College last Sunday afternoon.
The past three games Sacred Heart has efficiently swept their opponents. Against St. Francis, sophomore Annie Archer, Littleton, Colo. led the team with 12 kills and four blocks on the day, while Mydori Saipale, freshman, Oxnard, Calif., provided nine kills and sophomore Alex Bavasi, Flagstaff, Ariz. added seven more to ensure the victory.
Quinnipiac had a similar fate when they visited the Pioneers at home on Saturday. Saipale recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, and senior Christine Duffy, Massapequa, N.Y., also finished with 11 kills. Bavasi added eight kills and seven digs, while Archer led the match with six blocks.
The past four games have been against conference opponents, allowing Sacred Heart to jump from 0-1 in the Northeast conference to an astounding 3-1 conference record and sole possession of third place in the NEC.
"Even though we lost the season opener, it wasn't a loss we as a team were upset about. We were excited about how we saw things come together on the court. That match set the stage for how we performed these last three games. The opening loss left the team hungry for victory and ready to set the record straight," said Lynne Principio, junior, Ardsley, N.Y.
The Pioneers next match is this Friday at the NJIT invitational, where they square off against Howard University. Now the momentum gained from the past three wins can really put the Sacred Heart in the upper echelon of the NEC.
"The most important key to our success is our work ethic. We are extremely hardworking and support each other," said Principio, "which helps us tremendously. Coach gives us all the tools we need to be successful and motivates us, but in the end our hard work and togetherness allowed us to be successful these past three matches."
